Our data suggest a more complex series of rearrangements because of a small segment of about 3 Mb (markers 9F and 9E) that went undetected by reciprocal painting.
HyA12, HyA18, HyA29:
ANC1 generated three HyA chromosomes: HyA12 retained the ancestral centromere, while two neocentromeres have to be hypothesized for HyA18 and HyA29. These two chromosome are assumed to be distinct because of the independent history in the different gibbons. The precise position of the HyA29 neocentromere, therefore, remains unclear.
